This year saw another fantastic sprint triathlon in Great Dunmow hosted by Dunmow Tri club. Once again people of all ages and abilities came together for what was set to be one of the busiest events we have attended in quite sometime.
Following a race briefing at the crack of dawn a whopping 319 competitors were preparing to beat their personal bests and complete this 400m swim, 23km bike and 5km run before the sun got too high in the sky. Things certainly starting hotting up with the temperature reaching 25oC by 11am. Thankfully the events organisers were able to juggle the swim start times meaning more competitors were able to get off before the mid-day sun really took hold. The wind was low making this hilly bike section a little easier to deal with than in previous years but still a big challenge for tiring legs. By the time most competitors reached the run there was no wind and little respite from the beating sun making the water stations around the course vital for maintaining fluid levels.
There were some great efforts seen this year with a winning time of 1 hour 6 minutes!! A fantastic time to try and beat next year. There were plenty of achey legs following from the race to keep all three of our chiropractors and our physiotherapist busy well into the afternoon. Unfortunately there was one incident on the bike section which is a stark reminder of the dangers associated with this sport.
The ChiroHealth team would like to congratulate all those who participated at the weekend especially our existing patients and those that completed the very first triathlon, you trained hard and it paid off! We would also like to thank all those who made kind donations on the day resulting in over £100 being raised towards Phil Elms (Dunmow Tri Chairman) charity collection. Phil will be completing a mammoth double ironman next year to raise money for Candle Lighters, the children's cancer support charity based in Yorkshire. Best of luck to Phil with your training and the race next year. If you would like donate to Phil’s efforts you can do so at mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/philipelms1.
Thanks also go to the Dunmow Tri organisers who put in huge amounts of effort to see these events take place. We look forward to the next event and the 2013 Dunmow Tri.
